Dental Providers - Taxonomy Guidance
The most common error in Dental claims submitted to NCTracks is taxonomy. To help avoid taxonomy errors in billing, providers should note the following steps outlined below:
1. Review the taxonomy codes associated with your NPI(s) in NCTracks. See the Taxonomy Tutorial for step-by-step guidelines on how to view the taxonomy codes associated with your provider record.
2. In filing claims, providers should use the NPI, location, and taxonomy code for the service rendered that matches what is on their provider record in NCTracks.
- A provider group taxonomy is defined to be either "single-specialty" (193400000X) or "multi-specialty" (193200000X).
- An individual provider taxonomy is based on their classification and area of specialization. Some NPIs may only have a classification taxonomy code.
3. Taxonomy codes must be included on the claim for both the billing and rendering/attending NPIs.
4. The taxonomy codes required by NCTracks are different than the taxonomy codes you used for legacy and might be different than the taxonomy code on your National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) record.
5. Any clearinghouses or billing agents that you use must also make these changes for the claims they submit on your behalf to be accepted by NCTracks.
6. If you are not certain about what taxonomy code to use, you may want to consider keying a single claim into the NCTracks Provider Portal. The portal provides drop down boxes to select NPI, location, and taxonomy codes when filing claims. It also provides an immediate response regarding the status of the claim when submitted, so you will know if the taxonomy code is not correct.
